EVERY DONATION COUNTS
Thank You!
Our mission is simple, Feed people in need.
Your donations feed children and adults.
You can help change a life today.
The Soup Kitchen, Inc. (the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen) began operations on March 8, 1980 serving three meals a week. The Soup Kitchen, an independent non-profit corporation, now serves a large, healthy noon-time meal every day of the year. 54,473 meals were served last year. Doors open at 11:00 AM. Lunch service starts at 11:30 and ends at 12:45 PM daily.
The Soup Kitchen is staffed by volunteers from churches, clubs, businesses, and schools who prepare and serve the meals. Most groups also purchase the food for their serving day. The Soup Kitchen has strong support from thousands of generous individuals, churches, organizations, and companies who are committed to taking care of those in need in our community. Our database of volunteers and donors has now topped 10,000 entries.
Your support is vital to the Soup Kitchen. Less than 2% of our funding comes from grants…98% comes from individuals and businesses in our communities. We are not part of the United Way or Salvation Army — we are an independent nonprofit corporation. We need YOUR help: No Soup Kitchen guest pays anything for food or services.
One of every six people in the USA have some level of food insufficiency. Sadly, one in five children in the United States suffers from food insufficiency.
Our Wish List is Closed
We have moved out of Salvation Army building and are now located at 174 W Main Street in Benton Harbor. (Please send all mail to PO Box 8210, Benton Harbor, 49023.) We are working closely with the city of Benton Harbor, the Berrien County Health Department, and our many contractors cleaning and repairing the building. As we did through the pandemic, we are serving a daily sack lunch at the Main Street location from 11:30 to 12:45. Attendance hast been between 95 and 120, even with all the rainy days we’ve had lately.
We have many codes to meet and inspections to pass, so we cannot predict when we will be able to open the dining room and resume serving hot meals. We are moving quickly, given the huge amount of work to be done. Once the repairs and approvals are complete, our opening date will depend on the receipt and installation of our walk-in cooler and freezer.
Moving to a new location is proving to be quite expensive, so your monetary support is more important thank ever. Please click the “Donate” button at the top of the page to help. Thank you for your support!
