The Soup Kitchen, Inc. (the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen) began operations on March 8, 1980 serving three meals a week. The Soup Kitchen, an independent non-profit corporation, now serves a large, healthy noon-time meal every day of the year. 54,473 meals were served last year. Doors open at 11:00 AM. Lunch service starts at 11:30 and ends at 12:50 PM daily.
The Soup Kitchen is staffed by volunteers from churches, clubs, businesses and schools who prepare and serve the meals. Most groups also purchase the food for their serving day. The Soup Kitchen has strong support from thousands of generous individuals, churches, organizations, and companies who are committed to taking care of those in need in our community. Our database of volunteers and donors has now topped 10,000 entries.
Your support is vital to the Soup Kitchen. Less than 2% of our funding comes from grants…98% comes from individuals and businesses in our communities.
We need YOUR help: No Soup Kitchen patron pays anything for food or services.
One of every six people in the USA have some level of food insufficiency. Sadly, one in five children in the United States suffers from food insufficiency.
Our Wish List
ITEMS we need:
Ground Coffee
Disposable plastic or latex kitchen gloves
Cleaning cloths — bar mops or microfiber cloths
#10 cans of green beans, corn, or baked beans
If you have food on hand, we can take it if it has not expired or been opened. Please don’t buy food for us. We can buy food cheaper than you can, and we will buy much larger cans. Why? We have to open 18 15-oz cans to serve 100 people, but only 4 if they are #10 cans. We are happy to take game meats, but they must be processed by a licensed processor.
- We accept donations from 9 AM-1 PM. Call for other times.
- Do not leave food outside our delivery door. Anything left outside must be discarded.
